Kenya's Trending Topics on July 5, 2018

Deputy President William Ruto on Thursday emerged as the top trending topic on the Google search engine following a statement by former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale.

The DP became a person of interest as news emerged that the Rift Valley Council of Elders had challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare his support for the DP's 2022 presidency ambition.

"It will be a foolish thing for Uhuru to declare that he will support Ruto. As Ruto is sitting pretty, the President should encourage a situation where we leave things as they are," Khalwale stated, asking Ruto to call off the elders in their bid.

Patel Dam

The ill-fated Solai Patel Dam trended on Twitter on Thursday as the owner of the dam, Perry Mansukh, and managers presented themselves for arrest at the Naivasha Police Station.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji had ordered the arrest of the owner along with farm General Manager Vinoj Kumar and other officials on charges of manslaughter.

According to Haji, investigations had revealed that the dam was constructed by an unqualified contractor and without the proper equipment and design.

"Upon review of the file, I have established that there is criminal culpability on the part of Water Resource and Management Authority (WARMA), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and county government officials entrusted with the mandate of inspection, monitoring and control of the safety of dams," Haji's statement read in part.
