New GSU Boss Announced in Major Shake-up

Douglas Kirocho Kanja has been named as the new General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant in a new round of changes at the National Police Service.

Previously a Deputy Commandant at the GSU, Kanja has also been the Kilifi County Police boss.

He replaces Stephen Chelimo who left the police service after attaining the mandatory retirement age.

As the service's paramilitary wing , the GSU is made up of highly trained officers and is the single largest unit.

As part of the shake-up, Patrick Tito a long serving assistant of the Inspector General was named as the new head of the Diplomatic Police Unit (DPU).

He replaces Charles Mwau who drowned in floods in Makueni County in April 2018.

The DPU is tasked with providing specialized security for diplomats as well as liasing with diplomatic missions on matters of security.

Among other things, they also provide static and mobile security for the missions and coordinate all rapid responses.

In other changes, Central Regional Comander Francis Munyambu was moved to Rift Valley in the same capacity.

Munyambu swapped positions with Solomon Makau who will be the new Central Regional Commander.
