Energy Regulation Commission Raises Prices For Diesel and Petrol

The Energy Regulation Commission (ERC) increased the prices of super petrol by Ksh3.39 for a litre after a review of the costs of production.

Petrol will now go for Ksh112 per litre in Nairobi and its environs. Diesel had gone down by Ksh0.14 and will retail at Ksh103 per litre and kerosene that is widely used in Kenyan homes dropped, albeit insignificantly by Ksh0.35.

Eldoret will also be affected as they will pay Ksh114 per litre for super petrol while diesel will go for Ksh105.

Kisumu county will also bear the brunt of the new prices as they will now pay Ksh114 for a litre of petrol and Ksh105 for diesel.

Nakuru residents will pay Ksh112 for super petrol while diesel for them will be charged at Ksh104 which is slightly lower compared to that in other regions.

Mombasa however, will not suffer as the other cities. They will pay Ksh108 per litre which varies from what Nairobians and those in Kisumu and Eldoret will pay. The price of diesel as well be set at Ksh99.

The ERC explained that the increased costs are as a result of the expenses incurred for importation of super petrol, diesel and kerosene.

“The changes in this month's prices have been as a consequence of the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol increasing by 5.54 per cent from USD 700.01 per ton in May 2018 to USD 738.77 per ton in June 2018,” read a statement released by the energy body.

They also indicated that the depreciating value of the Kenyan shilling against the United States dollar was also to blame for their new decision.

The ERC stated that the new prices will come into effect on July 15th. The next review will be carried out on August 14th.
