Miss Lang'ata Prison Ruth Kamande Has Been Sentenced to Death

Miss Lang'ata Women Prison winner Ruth Kamande, who was found guilty of killing her boyfriend by stabbing him 22 times in 2015, has been sentenced to death.

In convicting her, High Court judge Jessie Lesiit noted that her actions proved malice, therefore, convicted her for murder.

The sentence was issued despite Ms Kamande’s advocate urging the court to hand her a lenient jail sentence arguing that she had “established a close relationship with God” since being taken into custody in 2015.

Her advocate also informed the court that the accused had enrolled to study theology education at the prison, an indication that her stay in custody had streamlined her.

However, on their part, the prosecution had pleaded with the judge to hand Kamande a death penalty for being arrogant during the trial.

“The 24-year-old then, whose life was cut short is an orphan and had a task of providing for the rest of the family members, hence justice should prevail,” stated the prosecution counsel.

In May, the High Court found Ms Kamande guilty of killing her boyfriend.

Kamande, who was on remand, made headlines after she won the Miss Lang’ata Women Prison's crown in 2016.

Appearing before the court, she pleaded guilty to killing her young lover and told the court that their argument ensued after she found a small yellow card from Aids Control programme showing he was a patient, in his room.

During the hearings, she claimed that when she confronted her boyfriend about it, he threatened her saying they would both rather die than have his HIV status known to the public.

According to the beauty pageant, the argument got out of hand when she discovered letters from two other women.
