31 Highway Secondary School Students, South B Injured After Fire Breakout

Thirty-one students have been rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after a fire broke out at the school dormitory.

The students from Highway Secondary School in South B, Nairobi, were injured in the Sunday morning inferno whose cause is yet to be established.

Reports indicate that a majority of the students are being managed for smoke inhalation and soft tissue injuries sustained during the fire.

According to the KNH head of communications Simon Ithae, the students admitted at the hospital are nevertheless in a stable condition.

Sources indicate that a quick response by a Kenya Red Cross team helped in containing the Sunday morning inferno.

The Highway Secondary School fire comes in the wake of increasing school fires in the past weeks which are largely blamed on arson by some of the students.

Scores of students from different schools across the country have been arraigned in court facing criminal charges over the burning down and destruction of school premises.

The Ministry of Education has in the past warned that the cost of reconstructing property destroyed during student unrest will be passed on to the parents and not the government.

On its part, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has indicated that students found culpable for taking part in the riots will face the full force of the law.

Among other things, such activities by the students will be registered in the bad books of the law enforcement authorities and will permanently reflect in their Certificate of Good Conduct.

On Saturday, police and locals raided Kanjuri Boys High School in Mathira, Nyeri County and thwarted an alleged attempt to burn down school property during 9 pm riots.
