Her sister, Hellen Mumbua, told The Standard that she started noticing the violence against her sister soon after Nzomo married a second wife.

According to Mumbua, Mwende often sought refuge from her abusive husband at her house in Kathonzweni.

The video that sparked outrage among members of the public caught the attention of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji.

The DPP ordered for the arrest of Nzomo and prosecution over the incident.

"The DPP has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to immediately have (the) suspect arrested and arraigned before court," a tweet from the Office of the DPP read.

He further directed those who witnessed the violence, recorded and did nothing to help the woman to face charges as well.
