Governor Sonko Puts Staff on The Spot Over Fake Bank Accounts

Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has put his County Chief of staff on the spot over millions lost in payments through fake bank accounts.

The agitated governor dressed down City Hall staff during an address at Kangemi on Saturday revealing that ghost bank accounts had received funds meant for casuals cleaning the city.

The county boss stated that youth drawn from outside the city had been deployed to work in some parts of the city while several others had been listed for payments yet they were not doing any work.

"Many youth have not been paid. I am grateful that they have not protested. We were allowed to start employing youth as casuals. We employed more than 1000 youth and asked them to have personal bank accounts. I directed the Cheif of Staff to have their bank accounts to avoid loss of money to the cartels.

"I am saddened that when this was planned this, the cartels and my Chief of staff obtained names and youth with multiple accounts which were paid more than Kshs16 Million. The bank notified me that 61 accounts were receiving multiple payments. We know them and they will go home no matter what or who they are. I will not be arrested on their behalf," stated Sonko.

He pledged to release owed wages to the casuals on Monday next week insisting that a few people would not be allowed to swindle taxpayers' money.

Sonko demanded that the County Chief of Staff makes a detailed explanation of how ghost workers had been paid in the city cleaning initiative.

He vowed to tackle corruption at City hall holding that he would not hesitate to sack those implicated in the scandal.

The governor has in recent days suspended top officials at city hall citing over mismanagement of resources.

Sonko already sent home Chief of staff Brian Mugo, acting Chief Finance Officer Ekaya Alumasi and acting head of County Treasury Stephen Mutua accusing them of misuse of public funds.

Health CEC Hitan Majevdia and County Health Director Thomas Ogaro were handed 14 days to explain why health facilities in Nairobi County lack medicine besides having poor services.
