Governor Mike Sonko Orders County Employees to Work Without July Salaries

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Monday ordered county workers to report to work despite delayed July salaries which he attributed to the laying off of top finance department officers at City Hall.

The governor warned that any employee who would not report to his or her workstation on Tuesday would risk losing their jobs.

In a notice issued by Governor Sonko, the workers were informed that a meeting between his administration, the Controller of Budget and Treasury officials had secured Ksh1.084 Billion for the salaries.

"To all Nairobi county workers, take note that failure to report to work will result in summary dismissal from employment without notice and in accordance with existing Labour laws," the notice read in part.

City Hall normally pays workers between the 25th and 27th of every month, however, the month's salaries were delayed after the governor fired the head of Treasury and Chief Finance Officer over alleged misappropriation of funds.

Speaking to journalists, Nairobi County Workers Union officials raised concerns that staff members were yet to receive their salaries despite the promises from the county administration.

The Union had earlier in the day warned the county workers against a letter that had been widely circulated on social media calling for a strike.

"We wish to advise our members that the Union is not a party to such a strike and has not issued any strike notice.

"You are therefore advised to treat the notice as fake and ill-intentioned.

"Further, be informed that the Union is actively addressing all grievances raised by our members," the letter signed by Boniface Waweru, the Union's secretary in Nairobi read in part.
