Governor Waititu Explains How He Wants Rivers Moved From Buildings

Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu on Tuesday came out to defend his stand against the ongoing demolition of buildings put up on riparian land.

Waititu's analogy of moving rivers away from the buildings instead of demolishing them subjected him to online ridicule from Kenyans for the better part of Monday.

The governor, in an interview on Milele FM, insisted that it is very possible to move the rivers from the buildings being brought down by the Nairobi River Regeneration Task Force.

"Tunawezajenga walls kupea mto mkondo mpya, haina shida inawezekana kusongeza mto (We can build walls to redirect them, it is not that difficult. It is possible to move a river), held Governor Waititu

A short video of the governor opposing the demolitions emerged on the internet but despite the trolling by Kenyans on social media, Waititu maintained the government should have engaged the owners of the buildings before demolition.

During the interview, the governor stated he still remains an ardent President Uhuru Kenyatta and Jubilee party supporter despite having opposed the demolitions.

He further revealed that most of his wealth had been acquired in Nairobi given he had for instance been the person behind garbage collection across the county for close to 10 years.

He indicated that over the years, his involvement and investment in the real estate sector stands as his key source of income.

"Kuna mahesabu mingi, na lazima watu wasikizwe. Mimi ni mtu ambaye nimeinvest kwa real estate kwa miaka mingi na hiyo ni ukweli, kabla ukashifu mtu msikize, muulize maswali na kuna details mingi na lazima watu wajieleze ndio ijulikane (There are a lot of calculations involved and people have to be listened to. I have been a real estates investor for many years and that is the whole truth. Before condemning anyone, it is important that talk to them since there is a lot of information that has to be made known and well understood)," stated Waititu.
