ERC Releases New Countrywide Prices for Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Tuesday released the new schedule for the prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene following a review in the taxes imposed on petroleum products.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke,  Director General Robert Pavel Oiemeke clearly outlined the new countrywide prices giving the maximum payable amount for each.

"The purpose of the fuel pricing regulations is to cap the pump prices of the products which are already in the country so that the importation and other prudently incurred costs are recovered while ensuring reasonable prices to consumers.

"Taking into account the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum prices In Nairobi are as follows; Super Petrol increases by Ksh1.53 while diesel and kerosene decrease by Ksh0.51 and Ksh0.78 respectively," the statement read in part.

The statement further explained that the new prices would take effect on August 15 and run through to September 14 as outlined.

According to the new schedule, motorists will pay the highest amount for petrol in Mandera town, Ksh127.54 per litre and the lowest will be in Mombasa town at Ksh110.42.

For diesel, which is mostly used by commercial vehicles, the highest amount motorists will part with is Ksh116.55 in Mandera and the lowest is Ksh99.44 in Mombasa.

Treasury Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge had in the past week alerted motorists that the prices would be shooting up to Ksh130 in the month of September.

The increase in petrol prices resulted from a 16% VAT remission that was promised in a multibillion deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"The petroleum VAT is intended to boost government revenues to rebalance the public debt, while also providing essential funding for the Big Four socio-economic agenda," George Wachira, the director of Petroleum Focus Consultants stated.
