Sonko to Repossess Grabbed Lavington Land for Public Library

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday evening announced plans to repossess a piece of land in Lavington along James Gichuru Road on which Subru Motors sits.

Sonko disclosed that Subru Motors was owned by a close friend of President Uhuru Kenyatta asserting that this would not stop them in the fight to reclaim grabbed public land.

The land was allocated to the former Nairobi City Council (NCC) by founding President Jomo Kenyatta for construction of a public library.

Sonko ordered Subru Motors to vacate the area with immediate effect.

"Let me also conclude by confirming that the proprietor of Subru Motors is a good friend to both HE the President and myself but because we have declared to fight IMPUNITY AND CORRUPTION, we are sorry for him that we shall not mix friendship with this BIG FIGHT," he wrote.

The land was allocated to the NCC for a lease-period of 99 years in 1972.

A number of conditions were set including that "The grantee shall not subdivide the land".

"The grantee shall not sell, transfer, sublet or charge the or any part there of," another read in part.

He maintained that an operation to reclaim grabbed public spaces would continue, noting that parcels on road reserves would also be repossessed.

Last week, Sonko led an operation to reclaim land in Gigiri meant for a fire station on which a showroom sits.
