DP Ruto Defends National Treasury CS Henry Rotich

The Deputy President William Ruto has faulted members of parliament tasked with probing the controversial sugar imports for having a plan to impeach a cabinet secretary.

The DP during the weekend sided with the National Assembly's majority decision to reject a report by the ad-hoc committee investigating the illegal sugar imports.

Speaking during a political gathering in Lurambi Kakamega, the DP concurred with the legislators' views that the report was poorly done.

"I heard the report filed had no mention of the mercury, they left out key concerns as the safety of the sugar, the importers and did not question them. Where do you want to take the cabinet secretary yet he did not import the sugar? The person who imported the sugar is well known," stated DP Ruto.

He took a swipe at the members of parliament for allegedly taking bribes instead of fighting for the interests of the sugarcane farmers.

He was speaking during the homecoming ceremony of the area MP Titus Khamala making the remarks that did not go well down the throats of the area politicians.

ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi fingered the DP for only seeking to defend members of the cabinet and not the interests of the cane farmers.

"He has defended CS Rotich and Aden Mohammed and did not defend the sugarcane farmers," noted Mudavadi while Bungoma Senator Moses Watangula appealed for the formation of an independent commission to tackle the controversies surrounding the sugar imports.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa of Jubilee party has been leading the push for the removal of the national treasury CS.

Barasa spoke at the function stating that he would still proceed with the move arguing that the blame squarely lies on Rotich for having opened doors to unspecified quantity sugar imports that saw contaminated sugar brought in to the Kenyan market.

The rhetoric is taking center stage at a time the country is experiencing an acute shortage of the commodity and a sharp rise in its retail prices.
