Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga Hits at Standard Newspaper Over Damaging Article

Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has scolded Standard Newspaper over an article alleging she sought parliament's intervention on her air travel plans owing to her well-endowed body size.

According to the publication on Sunday, Omanga reportedly wrote to the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) seeking permission to fly Business Class and not the Economy Section as prescribed by the assembly.

The Standard indicated that Omanga had argued that she cannot fit in the standard aircraft seat in the Economy Class of local flights due to her plus-size physique.

Through her Facebook, the legislator who had been quoted by the newspaper as having refuted the allegations termed the article as "sexist click and bait headline" reference to her shape.

"Despite the Speaker and Clerk of the Senate saying they are not aware of such a request I made to PSC, It is unfathomable that the newspaper spared a whole page to belabour on pettiness rather than focus on issues that are of importance to Kenyans," she lamented.

Terming the publication as a reflection of poor journalism characterized by sensationalized stories, trivia, misinformation and disinformation, Omanga indicated that the article was meant for commercial gain and sales.

"It would help to remind the newspaper, and anybody else who shares in their warped thinking, that I'm proud of my self and my physique and neither sexist headlines meant to egg readers into reading a convoluted story nor journalistic skulduggery will change it," she quipped.

"My advise to armchair journalists who have nothing to write is that there are so much to write out there, especially human interest stories.

"Only an idle mind would find time to peddle rumours and half-truths. My only focus and commitment, for now, is serving the people," Omanga concluded.

The story had drawn criticism against the Senator over perceived entitlement given that in July, she was among the leaders who went to Russia for the 2018 World Cup.
