5 Killed After Matatu Overturns on Kakamega-Kisumu Highway

Five people lost their lives after the matatu they were traveling in veered off the road and overturned.

The Monday morning accident happened near Coptic Church on the busy Kakamega-Kisumu highway.

Three passengers, a woman and two men, died instantly.

Two others succumbed to their injuries at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH.)

Kisumu OCPD Meshack Kiptum confirmed the incident noting that 12 others had been admitted at the facility.

Those who perished were taken to JOOTRH mortuary.

It was reported that the matatu was headed to Kisumu from Kakamega when the driver lost control and landed into a ditch.

"The driver failed to negotiate a roundabout before the vehicle rolled several times, killing three instantly. We suspect brake failure," Kiptum mentioned.

He also noted that the spot near Mamboleo junction had been labelled as a blackspot.

Consequently, the police boss instructed motorists to slow down when approaching the area.

The wreckage was towed to Kondele police station.
