Ezekiel Mutua Takes Action Against 'Socks' Condom Advert

Kenya Film and Classification Board CEO Ezekiel Mutua on Monday announced that he would take action against a condom advert that is targeting children.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the KFCB boss noted the complaints and concerns raised by a section of Kenyans regarding the "socks" condom advert airing on most TV stations.

"The Board today launched investigations on the matter and has established that the advert was not submitted for examination and classification in line with the requirements of the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222.

"The airing of the advert is therefore in contravention of the law and the producers, distributors and broadcasters will be held liable for the breach," he stated.

He added that the Board had given instructions to its lawyers to proceed and prosecute the concerned institutions for the breach.

Mutua further divulged that KFCB supported sex education and the campaign for safe sex, but condom adverts, just like all other adverts must be submitted to the Board for examination and classification in line with the law.

"Condoms must not give misleading information or target the wrong audience. Failure to submit the advert to the Board for examination and classification is a breach of the law. The uproar against the advert wouldn't be there had it been done procedurally," he conveyed.

A number of Kenyans were of a similar opinion with many siding with the KFCB CEO.

"That advert is really embarrassing and it shows how low we can go because of the love of money. Thank you for taking action," one user noted.

Another noted that the advert had instigated awkward conversations between parents and children.

"My daughter in kindergarten asked me to buy the sock. I just nodded and swiftly changed the subject," a user by the name Jakufu Jakufu observed.

KFCB was scheduled to give more information on Tuesday.
