Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu Released on Ksh5 Million Bond

Deputy Justice Philomena Mwilu was on Tuesday evening released on a Ksh5 Million personal bond.

Mwilu's defense team led by senior counsel James Orengo applied to have the DCJ released pledging cooperation from the accused.

Also in the court were lawyers Harun Ndubi, Nyamira Senator Okong'o Omogeni, Julie Soweto, George Khaminwa, Daniel Maanzo among others.

Appearing before Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi after several hours of grilling at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters, Mwilu was ordered to appear before the court on Wednesday at 9:00 am without fail.

The prosecution had sought to have Mwilu and her co-accused, Stanley Muluvi an advocate of the High Court, held over fears that they would interfere with proceeds of the matter.

An anti-corruption Court Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi ruled that given the matter had been concluded at time court offices and banks had been closed, there would be no reason to let the accused spend the night behind bars.

Mwilu was arrested at the Supreme Court earlier on Tuesday after attending a Judicial Service Commission meeting.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji okayed her arrest by DCI officers and has assured members of the public that his team had sufficient evidence to have the criminal charges inferred against Justice Mwilu.

The charges DCJ Mwilu is facing is abuse of office for personal gain and accepting a gift in the form of money in circumstances which undermined public confidence in the integrity of her office.

She has also been accused of conducting herself in disregard of the law, obtaining execution of a security belonging to Imperial Bank Ltd which is now under receivership by a false pretence and unlawful failure to pay taxes.
