ODM Condemns Arrest of Uganda's Bobi Wine

The Orange Democratic Movement has sent a lengthy message to Ugandan authorities condemning the mistreatment of opposition politicians.

ODM in a statement released on Friday, ODM condemned the arrest, torture and prosecutions of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine and his colleagues.

The party leadership stated that they had monitored the situation quietly with the expectation that the various interventions from across the world would change the situation but to no avail.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Chairman John Mbadi maintained that the violations had forced them to speak given the deterioration of affairs in Uganda.

“We are saddened by the fact that even after leaving custody with injuries that needed treatment abroad, Hon Kyagulanyi was stopped from leaving Uganda, and in the most callous and inhumane manner,” regretted ODM in the statement.

The party appealed to all parties in Uganda to urgently embrace the values of democracy and justice warning that dictatorship in the modern world remains unsustainable.

ODM further demanded that the rights, dignity and freedom of Hon Kyagulanyi are respected by the Ugandan authorities.

They held that: ”In particular he (Bobi Wine) must be allowed to immediately access the medical attention he deserves on humanitarian grounds. There are no two ways about this.

"We will keep an eye on these unfolding events, as we encourage the forces of democracy and peaceful revolution to remain unwavering and firm in their resolve to make our countries more responsive to the needs of their people.”
