DP WilliamRuto Declares Next Move After Fuel Hike

Deputy President William Ruto has come out to give a way forward after Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) hiked fuel prices.

Ruto mentioned that the executive will have a sitting with parliament to resolve the standoff over 16 per cent VAT increase in fuel products.

"The Executive will be meeting Parliament so as to address the concerns raised by Kenyans. As a matter of fact, a solution will be reached," told congregants at a prayer service in North Horr Marsabit.

He declared that a balance would be created so as not to burden Kenyans while seeing the government’s development plans to fruition.

The DP stated this will ensure Kenyans are cushioned from the effects of the increase.

ERC gave directions to oil marketers and fuel retailers to include 16 per cent Value Added Tax on petroleum products.

Motorists will now pay Ksh127.80 per litre in Nairobi from Ksh113 while a litre of diesel will retail at Ksh 115.

The increase has raised the concerns of many Kenyans as it will predictably lead to an increase in the prices of common commodities.

A section of legislators indicated they would initiate the process to impeach Treasury CS Henry Rotich if the new fuel levies are not dropped.

The Motorists’ Association of Kenya called on its members to boycott the increased fuel prices by participating in a nationwide strike.
