Kenya Power Responds to Photo of Transformer Erected Through House

Kenya Power on Monday responded to a photo that has been making rounds on social media of a house that was built with transformer poles through it.

The picture elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans online with a majority questioning the safety of the building.

"Is this even safe? Leave alone being legal? We seriously need to talk," one user noted.

Another added: "Considering how my extension gave me the shock of my life today both literally and figuratively I think we should talk about this madness."

Others believed that the picture was not taken in Kenya noticing the structural design that is not used locally.

"Looks Tanzania to me... The house roofing and the wall fence is common in Tz," one netizen noted.

"Not Kenya though... We've never had those poles design ever in Kenya," another added.

Giving the final word, Kenya Power sought to clarify that the photo was not taken in the country, pointing out that the poles' design was not used in the country.

"Here in Kenya, we use circular poles and not box like type as seen in the image. Safety for us is paramount," the power distribution body stated.

According to the Electric Power Act, transformers must be placed either in substations, in premises or on poles; and where transformers are out of doors, they shall be enclosed in watertight cases.

Where substations are on poles, they must be at such a height as to make them inaccessible except by means of a ladder or other special appliance; and where transformers are placed within a substation on premises, they must be inaccessible except to authorized persons.
