Sharon Otieno Had Escaped to Tanzania Before Her Murder - Mother Reveals

Slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno's mother Melinda Auma has come out to reveal that her daughter had fled to Tanzania after a botched attempt at her life.

The statement reaffirmed detectives’ hypothesis that the murder had been premeditated. It is alleged that the plan to kill her had been unsuccessful at least two times.

When Sharon returned home, she told her mother that some people were pressuring her to abort the baby.

Sharon woke up one morning and told me she wanted to go to Tanzania because she was no longer safe in Kenya. She didn't tell me who was threatening her life," explained Auma.

"She travelled to Mwanza by road. While there, she switched off her phones to prevent anyone from reaching her," she added.

The murder of the student has sparked nationwide outrage due to the powerful names being mentioned in the matter.

Migori Governor Okoth Obado has come clean about his relations with the late but denied any involvement in her death.

The police have, however, called on him and his wife to make new statements after the vehicle used to abduct Sharon was found with a county employee.

Suspects already in police custody include his personal assistant Michael Oyamo, Caspal Obiero and bodyguard Elvis Omondi.

Also being held are former Kanyadoto MCA in Homa Bay, Lawrence Mula and Jack Gombe, the driver of a Toyota Fielder suspected to have been used during Sharon's abduction.

The authorities have now named the Governor as a person of interest and stated that they will make a high profile arrest in the next 48 hours.

An officer privy to the investigations said detectives were preparing to arrest more suspects who could include the actual killers and their allies as suspects in custody had confessed.
