72-year-old Athlete Completes 10KM Race at Safaricom Mombasa International Marathon

A 72-year-old athlete on Sunday made history at the Safaricom Mombasa International Marathon after he ran and finished the 10KM race.

Nashon Kamau completed the race in 1:15:28 beating other younger athletes in the race.

Mr. Kamau, who comes from Limuru, Kiambu, was the oldest participant in the race held in Mombasa County.

Other notable participants in the 10KM race included Hon. Anthony Kiai of Mukurweini Constituency, Joshua Kandie of Baringo Central Constituency and nominated MP Sammy Serone.

In the 10KM race, Stephen Mwendwa retained his title in the men’s category crossing the finish line in a time of 33:17:39 followed closely by Daniel Kayiok who clocked 33:34:00 and Kipkorir Birir in a time of 33:40:06.

Naomi Jepngetich won the 10KM women’s category finishing at 35:14:17 followed by Nancy Rotich at 36:48:30 while Judith Cherono came third with 36:48:30.

The Mombasa edition also featured the 42KM race which Dismas Ewet won in a time of 2:16:52.

He beat Arit Kigen who came in second clocking 2:17:45 while Abraham Too finished in a time of 2:18:31.

“I am very pleased to have won this race today. The race was tough due to hot weather but I managed. I have been training so hard towards this and this is a dream come true. I will be out training so hard to defend my tittle in the next edition,” remarked Ewet.

The women’s 42KM was won by Peris Cherono who crossed the finish line in 2:30:44 followed by Alice Mogire who clocked 2:32:43 while Elizabeth Rumokol came in third after recording a time of 2:32:53.

Ewet and Peris each bagged Ksh 500,000 while the 10 Km winners Stephen Mwendwa and Naomi Jepngetich each pocketed Ksh40,000.

The marathon which was the 35th edition by Safaricom cost approximately Ksh 2.5 Million.
