Section of Sh5.2 Billion Road Launched by President Uhuru Caves in

Motorists in Mombasa are a scared lot after the collapse of a section of the newly constructed Ksh5.2 billion Port Reitz – Moi International Airport access road during the weekend.

On Sunday, a bridge area along the multi-billion investment granting access to the Mombasa port caved in raising concerns on the quality of work done by the Chinese contractors.

The road whose construction was initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta in January 2016 was jointly funded by the British Government through TradeMark East Africa and the Government of Kenya.

A Chines contractor was paid by the British government to a tune of Ksh2.7 billion, while Kenya spent Kshs2.5 billion on the compensation of landowners affected by the investment.

A section of the road is also seeking and a number of users raised an alarm cautioning motorist plying the road with pictures and videos of dangerous spots.

One Watene Kioko shared a photo of part of the road saying "This is on your way to Moi international airport. The road is slowly sinking and drivers should exercise caution."

Mombasa county Transport and Public Works CEC Tawfiq Balala confirmed the reports saying the affected section is along the island-bound service road near a footbridge.

The CEC told Daily Nation that "the contractor, China Wu Yi is already on site to fix it. The failed section is being exposed to establish the depth and lateral extent of the damage.”
