10 Members of Parliament were on Wednesday barred from travelling abroad after Speaker Justin Muturi refused to sign off on their trip.
The legislators had sought to travel to Tokyo, Japan to attend the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship tournament which is set to begin on Saturday.
The MPs had sought to be released to spend 14 days watching the national volleyball women's team, Malkia Queens, play during the tournament.
Taxpayers would have fully sponsored the venture that included air tickets, meals and accommodation, match tickets, per diems and other expenses.
Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama who had written the letter of request refused to speak to journalists after he was allegedly turned down by the speaker when he tried to seek an audience to plead his case.
An MP who had been listed for the travel spoke to the Daily Nation lamenting that their counterparts had been allowed to travel to Russia.
"The speaker has rejected our request that we travel to Japan to watch our own girls take on others from across the world.
"It is unfair because our colleagues were allowed to go to Russia despite Kenya not being represented," the MP who refused to be named stated.
Another MP added: "It was so scandalous to send MPs to Russia how can it be that these ones want to travel to Japan at the time the buzzword on the lips of Kenyans is austerity measures to check against wastage of the limited public resources."
Those who were scheduled for travel include Mr Wanyama, Beatrice Kones (Bomet East), Senators Irungu Kang’ata (Murang’a), Andrew Lang’at (Bomet), Christine Zawadi (nominated), Beatrice Kwamboka (nominated) and Victor Prengei (nominated).
