NYS Withdraws Buses From Some Nairobi Routes

The National Youth Service (NYS) on Monday reportedly withdrew its commuter buses from some Nairobi routes.

The green NYS buses which have become popular among many city residents have been moved to the Nairobi-Lang'ata route to ferry Kenyans to the Nairobi International Trade Fair (NITF).

Many commuters were caught off guard by the move with the effects evident in many routes including Waiyaki Way in Nairobi.

Between 27 and 50 NYS buses were introduced in April 2018 and dispatched to several city routes including Kibera, Githurai, Mwiki, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Dandora, Kariobangi, Kangemi and Kawangware routes.

Each bus takes at least four round-trips daily - the first two between 5 am and 9 am, and the last two between 5 pm and 9 pm - from Kencom and OTC bus stages.

Reports indicate that the buses ferry at least 6,488 passengers daily on official work days.

The buses boast upholstered leather seats, air conditioning, and passengers are charged a fixed fare of Ksh20 per trip in a move aimed to end transport tribulations.

The NYS buses were introduced to help decongest the city, restore discipline on the roads and stabilise fares and marked a return of organised scheduled bus services as used to happen before the advent of matatus.

The Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Show is an annual event held at Jamhuri Park and runs for seven days either in late September or early October.

It is the largest Trade Fair in the East African Region where regional, continental and global exhibitors display and demonstrate their services and products.
