The National Team, Harambee Stars, is yet to receive Deputy President William Ruto’s promise of Ksh50 million after beating Ethiopia over the weekend.
The DP explained that he will wait for the official communication about the team’s qualification from Confederation of African Football (CAF), through the Federation of Kenyan Football (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa.
“Mimi nangojea huyu prezo,aniambie we have qualified, mimi ni deliver (I am waiting for the President to confirm that we have qualified then I will pay),” explained Ruto.
CAF has been silent over the rankings in Group F, a situation that has invited confusion among the four teams with regards to who has qualified.
In the next few days, the Confederation is expected to determine whether Kenya has indeed booked a place in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Sierra Leonne, who are in the same group as Kenya, had their matches scrapped following the suspension of its Football Association (SLFA) by FIFA due to the government’s interference in the football affairs.
If they are eliminated from the AFCON qualifiers, Kenya will be assured of at least finishing second in the group, earning us an automatic qualification.
If not, we will have to beat them at home to confirm our position in next year’s finals.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who had also promised a cash reward for the team, honoured them with a donation of Ksh3 million after the game.
Victor Wanyama captained the national team to a 3-0 victory with goals from himself, Michael Olunga, and Erick Johanna.
