Uhuru Declines Reading Formal Speech on Live TV

President Uhuru Kenyatta declined to read his speech during the Small Medium Enterprises Roundtable meeting at Strathmore University.

The President admitted that he was disappointed by the failure of his government to improve the SME sector that had been important in the creation of employment for Kenyans.

"Wacha nisijiabishe hapa kusoma maneno ambayo ni story pekee yake, (Let me not read the speech that is full of stories)," stated Uhuru.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who had spoken before the president promised Ksh500 million for the rehabilitation of Gikomba market.

Uhuru, however, condemned Sonko for taking too long to address the Gikomba issue and explained that matters facing SMEs should be handled without delay.

"Sonko, ukikubali utoke hapa uitee watu wako wafunge hiyo sewage, maji itemebe vizuri shida iko wapi? (Sonko, if you leave here and call your people to repair the sewage so that water can flow easily, is that a problem?)," remarked the President.

He further explained that the implementation of the Finance Bill should not be used as an excuse to why SMEs businesses have not performed.

"Even though the Finance Bill has been passed, let's think outside the box on how to make the economy work especially for small and medium-sized enterprises," urged the Head of State.

President Uhuru who is serving his second and final term also directed Energy CS Charles Keter to review electricity cost for SMEs and come up with a sustainable plan to ensure the cost of power to small and medium-sized enterprises is brought down.

The Head of State promised that such a forum will be held after two months to review the strides made from the problems highlighted during the Tuesday forum.
