Kenya's Trending Topics on October 23, 2018

Kenyans on Twitter took to the social media platform on Tuesday to raise awareness on depression as a mental illness.

Worrying statistics and causes of the illness were shared on the hashtag #KOTLoyalsAgainstDepression as netizens attempted to help each other understand the disease.

Here are some of the posts that were shared.

 

Psychiatrist and mental health advocate Chitayi Murabula who recently spoke to Capital FM noted that depression was on the increase especially among youth aged between 15 and 29.

"It’s worth noting that 75 per cent of the 800,000 people who die annually as a result of suicide come from lower and middle-income countries," she stated.

Dr Murabula added that there is a shortage of psychiatrists in the country currently having only 88 against the whole country's population.
