The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party on Thursday announced changes in its representation at the Nairobi County Assembly.
In a statement released a few hours after the Deputy Party leader Hassan Joho's meeting with the National Assembly minority whip Junet Mohamed, ODM announced changes in the Nairobi County Assembly house leadership.
National Chairman John Mbadi in the letter addressed to the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, stated that the party had dropped MCA Elias Okumu and Peter Imwatok from the minority leader and Minority whip's roles respectively.
Mbadi directed that the changes take effect immediately with Kennedy Oyugi and Nicholas Okumu replacing them as Minority Leader and Minority whip at the Nairobi County Assembly.
"The party expects these changes to take effect immediately. Therefore, this letter overrides the earlier communication from the party," stated Mbadi. He asked the speaker to take a quick action on the changes so as to create a healthy working relationship within the County Assembly.
It is still unclear why the party had dropped Imwatok, who has constantly been in confrontations with Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
In a recent a public address, Governor Sonko warned MCAs opposed to his administration saying just as one would not win a battle against the national government, he expected the leaders to shun fighting his leadership at the county level.
Okumu, who takes over as the Minority Whip, is the Lower Savannah MCA while Kennedy Okumu represents Nyayo Highrise ward.
ODM party leader Raila Odinga was informed of the changes through the letter by Mbadi.
