LSK Questions DPP Over Ksh 500 Million Milimani Court Scandal

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) on Thursday called upon the DPP to hasten the investigations over misuse of funds at the Milimani Law Courts.

LSK President Allen Gichuhi stated that a strategy was formulated that led to the misuse of Ksh 500 million at the law court.

"The LSK is alarmed by these corruption allegations and we call upon our members and the public to remain calm as we wait for the DPP to probe the allegations.

"Our investigations clearly point to some law firms working in collusion with the Judiciary clerks among other individuals who are behind this,” stated Gichuhi.

He further advised DPP Noordin Haji that the matter should be treated with seriousness to ensure those involved are prosecuted.

Gichuhi, however, pointed out that LSK members should not be victimised by those in charge of the investigations.

The DPP had launched investigations into the embezzlement of revenue and tax collected at the courts, additional costs used to refurbish the courtrooms, unlawful extension of medical insurance cover for judicial officers and an unapproved contract for providing security guards.

In August, an internal audit by the Audit and Risk Management Directorate of the Judiciary revealed a further Ksh 36 million was lost through fake receipts.

According to the audit, 371 fake receipts at the minimum, identified in the assessment aided the loss of Ksh 26 million at the Commercial and Tax Division registry.

"Although only 30 parallel receipts came to the attention of the auditors during the review of case files, more parallel receipts might have been issued since a receipt book contains 50 receipts.

"Consequently, a huge amount of public funds might have been lost as a result of parallel receipts,” read the audit.
