The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is looking into allegations of corruption during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kakamega on October 20.
Funds set aside for stipends for junior Prisons officers who participated in the national fete are said to have been manipulated and diverted by powerful individuals.
A number of the junior officers recorded statements with the Police, Kakamega Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss John Onyango confirmed.
He further stated that accounting officers in the Prisons Department would be interrogated over the matter.
“A number of prison officers who were engaged in the celebrations for a period of one month have so far recorded statements.
"We are now moving the probe to Nairobi to establish how much money was released," he stated.
Sh2 million in stipends was to be shared among 211 officers.
The funds were dispatched to the Regional Prisons Office.
Officers in the camp were entitled to breakfast, lunch and supper every day for 30 days and an undisclosed daily stipend.
181 officers each got paid Sh9,000, the senior sergeants, sergeants and corporals were paid Sh12,000 each, the inspectors received Sh15, 000 and the superintendent and chief inspector got Sh20,000 each.
