Kabogo Slams Mt Kenya MPs Over Uhuru's Future After 2022

Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo on Tuesday joined the debate initiated by Mt Kenya region politicians seeking to have amendments on the Presidential term.

Kabogo addressed reports that some Jubilee MPs from the region had in a closed-door meeting, discussed a possibility of extending Uhuru Kenyatta's term beyond 2022.

In an online conversation with Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, Kabogo told off the politicians saying their agenda was inconsequential as he was sure President Kenyatta would retire after his second term in office.

"I can bet president Kenyatta has no intentions to retain power after his term ends. Take that to the bank. Those are busy nobodies who should be ignored, and who do they speak for and to?" Kabogo wrote on Twitter.

Senator Mutula has appealed to the Head of State to emulate leaders like the former US President Barrack Obama, saying there is honour in retirement.

"Obama and our President are age mates. The statement in Naivasha is not about age of the President, but a precursor for a Constitutional amendment," posited Senator Mutula.

The central Kenya lawmakers had complained after their meeting in Naivasha, accusing President Kenyatta of ignoring the Mt Kenya belt which they say contributes 60 per cent of the country's GDP.

The MPs claimed that despite overwhelmingly voting for Kenyatta, he had ignored his home area in his development agenda demanding to be allocated more resources by the State.

Kenyatta in an interview with CNN's Richard Quest, affirmed that he won't amend the law to seek a third term and that he is only keen on improving the economy.

Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang’ata reportedly suggested to amend the Constitution and create a position for the president to serve as Prime Minister after his term ends in 2022.
