DCI Nabs Another Consignment of Expired Unga

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Wednesday nabbed another consignment of expired Unga Siranga area, Dandora.

The detectives raided a house and recovered several bales of expired Exe Wheat, Dola Wheat and Golden Wheat Flours that were being repackaged after expiring in July 2018.

Following the raid, two people identified as Joyce Nyambura and Samuel Kamau were arrested.

This comes barely a month after Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjurirevealed that there were more than 50 tonnes of expired beans in a silo belonging to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).

Kiunjuri had appeared before the Senate committee to answer questions on the maize scandal and crisis in the country after President Uhuru ordered a probe into the maize scandal.

Explaining the existence of the expired beans the CS told the committee that the seeds were bought from Kenya Seed Company by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2012 and supplied to NCPB to be sold to Nyamira County farmers.

This was meant to help the farmers deal with the outbreak of a maize disease and diversify on the range of crops they cultivated.

The expired bean seeds are a result of failure by farmers to buy the seeds from NCPB. The CS, however, did not give a clear answer on why the seeds were not taken out to other counties.

In September the Kenya Bureau of Standards and Public health have seized expired cooking oil, rice, sugar and flour worth more than Ksh20 million in Eldoret.

Residents of Eldoret had raised concern over increasing cases of traders selling expired goods in the town and its environs.
