Kenyan athlete Mary Jepkosgei Keitany on Sunday won the New York City Marathon after clocking 2:22:49.
This is after beating Vivian Cheruiyot (Kenya), who ran 2:26:2 and Shalane Flanagan (United States) who came in third with a time of 2:26:22.
On April 2017, Keitany set a record at the London Marathon after finishing the race in 2:17:01.
During the last half of the race, Keitany secured her place and remained far ahead of the rest of the pack.
She ran alone maintaining her pace and only accelerated as she ground toward the finish.
Despite being chased by a combined team of all-star American distance runners, Keitany did not yield to the challengers Keitany increasing her pace over the competitors by nearly a minute per mile in the second half of the race.
In 2016, Keitany pulled away at the half marathon mark and beat her closest challenger by 3.5 minutes.
In 2003, another Kenyan Mary Okayo won the New York City Marathon and set a record time after clocking 2:22:31.
In 2017, Keitany came a close number two in the NYC Marathon after finishing in 2:27:54 losing to Shalane Flanagan of US who won in 2:26:53.
This is Keitany's sixth appearance in the New York marathon having previously emerged victorious in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
