Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale’s tweet about how much Deputy President William Ruto spent at a kiosk has backfired on him.
The tweet read that, “Yesterday a lucky Susan Mugasia served tea worth Ksh250 to William Ruto & VIPs at her kiosk at Shianda market in Kakamega. The Deputy President gave her Ksh100,000 and told her to keep the change!”
The politician received backlash from netizens who were not impressed by the gesture.
Many of the comments that followed were of people expressing their displeasure about the DP’s actions and Khalwale’s revelation.
Some who assumed that he took the picture ridiculed that he had been reduced from an influential politician in the region to Ruto’s blogger.
Other castigated the move because it encouraged a stereotype of politicians looting funds in order to replenish the money they hand out during their interactions with members of the public.
One comment that stood out read, “The only good thing is that the lady has received part of the looted public funds. The culture of handouts is practised by politicians who have nothing to tell the people. They buy support.”
A netizen who could only be identified as Abraham explained that there was no wonder why leaders from the region were clutching at the coattails of the DP.
He reasoned that if a peasant lady was given Ksh100,000, how much more had Ruto given the politicians who promised to rally behind his 2022 presidential bid.
After his stop in Kakamega, the DP travelled to Migori and Homa Bay counties where he is expected to launch a number of government projects.
