Raila Odinga to Meet Nairobi MCAs Over Party Leadership

Orange Democratic Movement Leader Raila Odinga is slated to meet Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from the party this Thursday.

The meeting is aimed at solving leadership wrangles experienced by the top-tier among party members at Nairobi County Assembly.

ODM Chairman Mr John Mbadi stated that letters had been sent out to the MCAs with an aim of ending the disagreements that threaten a rift even for the top leadership.

The letters have gone out to the MCAs notifying them of a meeting. The matter is set to be arbitrated this week in a bid to bring together the two groups,” the ODM Chairman remarked.

This comes a month after Mbadi wrote a letter informing the acting Speaker of the county assembly, Chege Mwaura, about the changes made in the party’s leadership specifically the minority leader and minority whip seats.

Highrise MCA Kennedy Oyugi and Lower Savanna MCA Nicholas Ouma had been selected to replace minority leader Elias Okumu and minority whip Peter Imwatok respectively.

The two had reportedly opposed a call by the party not to effect changes to its committee membership.

The overriding communication will come after the meeting. It can decide that Okumu remains as minority leader or Oyugi or another MCA takes over,” clarified Mr Mbadi.

The County’s Speaker, however, turned the requests from the Chairman down on grounds that he did not follow proper procedure and the standing orders.

The standing orders stipulate, “The whip of the second largest party or coalition of parties in the county assembly shall forthwith, upon a decision made under this standing order, communicate to the speaker in writing the decision together with the minutes of the meeting which the decision was made.”
