Gikomba Market on Fire

A fire broke out at Gikomba Market on Wednesday morning.

Reports indicated that the fire started at around 3 am.

Red Cross and the County fire rescue team initiated efforts to put out the fire at around 5 am.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Violet Omnila, who is a trader, stated that the flames had razed down several stalls and a bank at the market was still on fire.

The trader further explained that the police and the fire team had not managed to put out the inferno, with a section of the U&I bank still burning.

"The police today have really tried.

"They have been able to contain the fire from spreading to the nearby residential areas," remarked Omnila.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

In June this year, another fire broke out at the usually busy market, which left at least 15 people dead and more than 60 injured.

Some of the victims suffered severe burns while others choked after inhaling poisonous fumes as they battled to save and salvage their property.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had ordered police to investigate the cause of the fire that had destroyed property worth millions at the market.
