MPs Demand for 5-Star Quality Food, Protest Poor Quality Supplies

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale on Wednesday led the House in a protracted protest over what they claimed was the supply of poor quality food to the lawmakers.

The legislators, in a heated debate, voiced their concerns over the food prepared, demanding that the catering services be outsourced so as to let them feel at a five-star hotel.

The protest had the backing of a House committee report that seeks to install major changes in the catering services at Parliament after a benchmarking session abroad.

“We shall have to outsource this catering services. Members of this House cannot conduct the business of cooking food. The catering should be given to the right people who can give quality services,” state the Garissa Township MP.

The lawmakers want Speaker Justin Muturi, who chairs the Parliamentary Service Commission, to scout for professional chefs who shall replace the current staff who the say have consistently offered poor quality meals.

A section of the MPs visited the United Kingdom and the Northern Ireland Assembly where they borrowed catering aspects that saw them recommending the construction new cafeterias.

The MPs are also pushing for the renovation of the kitchen, parliament bar, gym and have decried a killer smell from their toilets.

The over 50 recommendations by the committee had been adopted in part with several of them being dropped by the Muturi-chaired House Committee.
