Kenya Red Cross Vehicle Attacked in Ijara, Garissa County

A Kenya Red Cross vehicle was on Saturday morning sprayed with bullets during an attack by armed gunmen in Ijara, Garissa County.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Kenya Red Cross Secretary General Dr Abbas Gullet conveyed that the vehicle came under attack at Ruqa area after unknown assailants shot at it, injuring one volunteer.

"The KRCS teams were from Masalani headed towards Ijara to conduct assessments for one of the projects we are implementing in the area when attackers from a nearby bush shot at the car from the front and the sides," he disclosed.

The injured volunteeer was evacuated to Masalani sub county hospital for stabilization and had already been evacuated to Malindi by one of the ambulances for further treatment.

"The rest of the team were not injured and currently receiveing counselling and psychosocila support due to the traumatic incident," he added.

Dr Gullet condemned the attack terming it as unfortunate for dedicated men and women whose only commitment was to selflessly serve their community to be subjected to such violence.

"The incident was reported to the police for investigations and a meeting scheduled with the area leadership and community leaders," he concluded.
