2 Killed, 11 Injured After Fatal Bus Collision Along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

A Sunday morning accident left two people dead while 11 others got injured after a bus and lorry collided along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The accident that occurred at around 1 am at the Lukenya area in Athi River, involved a Mash Poa bus and a lorry.

Police reports indicated that the driver of the lorry collided with the bus as he was overtaking.

"It happened that the Isuzu lorry registration Number KCG 048Y was being driven from Mombasa general direction heading towards Nairobi direction and on reaching at the location of the accident it overtook a fleet of motor vehicles and collided head on with motor vehicle KCJ 399A which was being driven on the opposite direction," read the police report.

The wreckage of the two vehicles were taken to the Athi River Police Station awaiting inspection.

Bodies of the deceased were moved to the Shalom Community Hospital mortuary while the injured were taken to Machakos Level Five Hospital for treatment.

In July, a similar accident occurred along the same highway near Sultan Hamud leaving 9 people dead and 20 others seriously injured.

Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim confirmed that the head-on-collision involved a bus and a lorry.

"The vehicles collided head-on and went up in flames," stated Maalim.

The police boss had stated that investigations into the accident had begun.
