The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) on Monday introduced new schedules for the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service (NCRS) amidst the ongoing matatu crisis.
In a statement sent out by Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) James Macharia, he noted that the new schedules by KRC will be effected to ease the traffic.
"As the government continues to enforce the Traffic Law to improve road safety and management of the sector, the public is requested to support the Government efforts in order to realize the long-term benefits for all Kenyans.
"Therefore, to ensure the public will be able to continue with their day to day activities in Nation Building, KRC is hereby directed to increase the number and frequency of commuter trains on all routes," the directive read.
Besides, CS Macharia instructed KRC to also reduce the train fare by 10% until the normal public transport services resume.
Among the routes that will enjoy the increased train trips is the Kahawa-Nairobi route which will have a train departing at 7:20 am and 10:40 am.
Besides, there will be a new Nairobi-Embakasi Village train departing at 8:10 am and a return trip at 9:10 am.
In the evening, the Nairobi-Kikuyu train will have an additional trip departing at 2:00 pm in addition to the 5:35 pm one.
Besides, there will be an additional trip from Nairobi to Kahawa departing at 3:00 pm.
There will be also a train leaving Nairobi to Embakasi Village at 3:00 pm.
Elsewhere, Education CS Amina Mohamed on Monday directed schools to use their buses to ferry KCSE candidates to and from school due to the ongoing transport crisis.
Speaking at Naivasha Girls High school, CS Amina stated: "Students in boarding schools do not have problems but we are concerned by those candidates in day schools and we have directed principals to use their buses to ferry them to school".
