Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has broken his silence, days after his deputy Francis Maliti was impeached on grounds of gross misconduct and incompetence.
The County Head faulted the legislators terming their action as a means of covering up their corrupt dealings.
According to Mutua, a section of the MCAs moved to impeach Maliti, who heads the Finance docket, upon his inquiry on foreign trips that were flagged by Auditor General Edward Ouko.
"Why is the county assembly speaker and leadership afraid of releasing their documents? I truly believe that majority of members are not even aware that they are being used to cover up corrupt activities and will probably go down with the corrupt leaders.
"As part of that responsibility, the deputy governor has to ensure that funds utilised by the executive and assembly are spent within the law and accounted for,” he was quoted by the Star.
Mutua added that he had written to the Auditor General to send a team to the assembly for further investigations.
"After his report is ready, I will study it and take proper action including forwarding it to the EACC and DCI to take appropriate action.
"In the meantime, Maliti continues to serve as CEC, finance and revenue collection," Mutua disclosed.
During the motion to impeach Maliti, the MCAs cited that the former DG did not have a degree in finance and thus not qualified to lead the finance department.
They also put across that he failed to report on the implementation of the annual county budget in addition to failing to implement the County Bursary Fund and the Machakos County Health Management Fund.
