Deputy President William Ruto on Monday linked a section of MPs to homosexuality over the opposition to the Gender Bill.
Speaking in Ol Kalou constituency, Nyandarua County, the DP indicated that the Two-thirds Gender Rule is a Constitutional provision that needs to be upheld.
"If you have a mother, a girlfriend, a wife and a daughter, why oppose the three gender rule? This is a government policy.
"No sane man comes out openly opposing or fighting women. Why do men want to compete with women? Those opposed to the law must be homosexuals," the DP was quoted.
His remarks came after a section of lawmakers at the meeting expressed their opposition to the Bill that seeks to reduce gender parity in leadership positions.
Led by Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni, the MPs indicated that they are opposed to any constitutional change to create more positions for any leaders owing to the inflated wage bill.
However, the DP likened opposition to the Gender Bill to the efforts by the colonialists to deny Africans self-rule.
"I want to ask our members of parliament, good people, make sure the Constitution is implemented in full especially in matters to do with gender.
"Wale watu wanasema eti wanawake hawafai kupewa nafasi ya uongozi katika Kenya kwa sababu wako na upungufu hawana tofauti na wakolini (Those opposed to women being accorded leadership positions in Kenya pointing on their weaknesses are no different from the colonialists).
"Wakoloni walituambia hatukuwa tayari kua nchi huru kwa sababu hatuwezi kujisimamia. Si sisi sasa ni nchi huru? (Colonialists argued that we were not ready for independence since we could govern ourselves. Did that stop us from becoming a republic)? he posed.
Rallying the MPs to seize the historic moment by passing the Gender Bill, Ruto concluded, "Let us give women an opportunity for leadership in Kenya".
