Igembe South MP, Paul Mwirigi, was on Tuesday ordered to pay Kshs1 Million bond with a surety of a similar amount on charges of helping a prisoner escape.
The youthful MP had been arraigned in court and given an option of paying a Kshs 500,000 cash bail to be released.
He was also charged with obstructing the police, with the prosecution opposing his release over public unrest.
There was a heavy security presence at Meru Police Station and Meru Law Courts as proceedings against the MP took place.
Represented by three lawyers, he pleaded not guilty to the charges with his lead counsel Ken Muriuki arguing that the offences were misdemeanours and as such, he should get bail.
Mwirigi was arrested on Monday for allegedly mobilising Probox and motorcycle drivers to oppose the ongoing road safety crackdown.
Tigania East divisional police commander Sammy Kosgei confirmed his arrest disclosing that Mwirigi had been handcuffed and taken to Mikinduri Police Station.
According to Mikinduri town Chief Jacob Michuki, the MP was accompanied by people who attempted to remove a police roadblock at Kiguchwa market along Mikinduri-Maua road.
It was when the officers called for reinforcement that the rowdy crowd fled.
The case will be mentioned on December 6 this year pending hearing on February 25, 2019.
Mwirigi is Kenya's youngest MP, an orphan who went to a day school through well-wishers and never dished out money to be elected in the 2017 General Election.
