Journalists Arrested for Blocking Police from Arresting Shylock

Two journalists were, on Tuesday, taken into custody after they were accused of obstructing police work.

The two, Brian Ondeng from Kenya News Agency and Geoffrey Oguma from Nam Lolwe Radio, were accused of blocking the police from arresting a shylock.

According to reports, the two had gone to cover an event where the police were arresting a shylock when they were arrested and spent the night in jail.

Journalists from the area where the two were based, Siaya and Kisumu, stood in solidarity with two complaining that scribes are often mistreated by police.

The two accused the Bondo OCS Abdikadir Yusuf of assaulting them claiming that he confiscated their equipment including wallets, recorders, press cards, mobile phones, notebooks among others.

The court issued a summon for the OCS to appear in court on Tuesday, December 4, afternoon.

They told the court that, while covering the event, they produced their press cards to prove that they were legitimately from a media house but the OCS took the cards away.

He then instructed other officers who were with him to arrest the journalists.

Bondo Principal Magistrate Obiero, however, released them on Kshs10,000 cash bail each after pleading not guilty to obstructing police work.

The case is set for hearing on January 22, 2019.
