NHIF Receptionist Fredrick Sagwe Onyancha Takes Chopper Rides to Avoid Traffic

New details have emerged about the NHIF receptionist Fredrick Sagwe Onyancha, who according to reports, takes chopper rides to avoid traffic.

According to the Nation, Onyancha (39), who is a prime suspect in the NHIF scandal leads a lavish lifestyle at his home in Athi River.

He uses the millions he has minted to hire a helicopter and avoid traffic along the 30 KM stretch from his home to office.

The publication noted that he would occasionally indulge in the chopper ride from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to his home, a behaviour that left many of his neighbours and friends wondering.

It is reported that Onyancha bought eight houses worth Kshs160 Million between 2013 and 2017 at an upmarket estate in Athi River.

His lifestyle appeared to change suddenly after he joined the tender evaluation committee at NHIF which deals with awarding tenders in upwards of multi-million shillings.

According to the police investigating illegal dealings at NHIF, he first bought four houses valued at Kshs20 Million each in 2013. He also bought himself top-of-the-range cars including Range Rovers and Toyota V8s.

Presenting the case against Onyancha and 19 others in court on Monday, assistant deputy director of public prosecutions, Emily Kamau, held that the crime committed was “worse than murder” by stealing money meant for treatment of patients.

“They are the ones who enabled siphoning of public funds. We are talking about more than Kshs500 million stolen from the management of the health scheme. (The court should) put the NHIF fraud case in the category of murder," she declared.

The statement caused an uproar from the defence's legal team comprising of Tom Ojienda, Cliff Ombeta, Danstan Omari, Annita Mesaki, Migos Ogamba, Katwa Kigen, Ham Langat and Felix Kiprono.

“There is no charge sheet of a dead patient before this court. You have no evidence to support the claim. Just forget it,” Ombeta rebuffed.
