Doctors who have been working on rumours of a strange new sexually transmitted disease (STD) have revealed that it was a hoax.
Migori County Executive in charge of health Isca Oluoch revealed that the medics could not find any substantial information over the disease.
He further advised Migori residents to treat the rumours as such while asking them to be sexually responsible to avoid catching other STDs.
The rumours broke out last week and instilled fear in the area residents over the likelihood that the disease was capable of killing patients in one week.
“There is a lot of talk about the disease called Jakadala, which, according to rumours, has terrible signs. Already, a surveillance team is out to ascertain facts.
“What we currently know is that the disease has been named after a popular musician. What we have are rumours, but we are not taking chances,” revealed the health executive earlier.
Fear of the disease was further fueled by claims that up to five patients had been admitted and were being treated for the strange disease.
The reports started after Migori County Referral Hospital admitted a patient who was suffering from cancer of the penis.
The disease was reported to have affected the areas of Awendo, Komito mines in Rono sub-county and Kuria, Suna and Nyatike areas.
Migori is one of the areas with a high Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV virus due to the prevalence in prostitution.
