Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Tuesday made an impromptu tour of Machakos Level Five Hospital where he caught the staff by surprise.
It is reported that the governor toured the hospital compound, toilets, in-patient and out-patient sections, pharmacy, and the hospital cafeteria.
He was accompanied by his deputy Francis Maliti, Health Executive Ruth Mutua, Hospital Superintendent Hellen Nzuki, Chief Officer in Charge of Health Jackson Nthanga and the governor’s advisor on health matters, Ancent Kituku.
Mutua was seen interacting with patients and the public as he inquired from them the quality of services offered.
However, according to reports, Mutua was displeased by the state of the facility.
At one point, the governor shocked the public and his handlers when he jumped over pavement to collect litter.
“You don’t need any money to clean the hospital compound, empty garbage bins or even clean toilets. Somebody must be held accountable for this lethargy,” he declared.
Nonetheless, he commended doctors, nurses and other health professionals for offering efficient services under the Universal Health Coverage programme.
In a bid to decongest the health facility, the governor stated that proper patients referral system would be put in place to ensure minor cases were handled at health centres, dispensaries, Level Three and Four hospitals.
Furthermore, Mutua called on the Ward Representatives to put their differences aside and work with him for the sake of delivering development to the residents of Machakos.
He also invited the representatives and other leaders to the opening of Kivandini-Masinga road on Wednesday.
On October 15, 2018, a section of the MCAs led demonstrations demanding that the governor explains how the 2017/2018 development budget was spent, among other grievances.
