Police Summon EX-MP Joseph Kiuna as Hate Speech Crackdown Intensifies
Police officers have asked former Molo MP Joseph Kiuna to surrender to nearest station after he made hate speech comments in a viral video.
In the clip, Kiuna appeared claiming that his ethnic group would stand their ground the coming election period unlike how 2007/08 was.
“Walifanya vile walifanya, 2007/2008, wakatuambia tusameheane, na tukawasamehe...na wakati huo wote nimekuwa mheshimiwa, tumekuwa tukiishi na amani...roundi hii...we are not going to retreat, (They did what they deed in 2007/2008 and asked us to forgive them, we did. And all that time I have held office, we lived in peace. This round, we are not going to retreat,” he stated.
In a statement, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) in conjunction with the National Police Service (NPS) warned public over stern action against hate speech.
NPS stated that there would be severe consequences to those who would be caught politically inciting the public in contrary with stipulations of the constitution.
“We want to send a strong warning to people and especially those who want to provide input to the political debates currently ongoing...there are severe consequences for crossing the red line,” read the statement.
This comes a day after the police launched a manhunt on a self-proclaimed DP William Ruto's supporter who threatened a repeat of post-election violence in 2022.
The post caught the eye of the police after former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo shared it tagging Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP Ruto.
The tweet, posted by one Dennis Kiptoo Mutai, claimed that the country would suffer worse violence compared to the 2007/08 one if the president does not support Ruto for the top office.
““Our attention has been drawn to some Tweets supposedly issued by a named individual issuing threats to ignite inter-ethinc clashes akin to what occurred in 2007/8 in parts of the country.
“Let it be known to all that we are taking these threats as a serious matter,” posted NPS.
