A top candidate who excelled in 2018 KCPE has resorted to living in the streets after a sponsor abandoned him.
Eliud Kipkosgey, who scored 362 marks and topped his school, was supposed to join Tambach High School in Elgeyo Marakwet.
He had earlier dropped out of school and decided to become a street boy after his mother died in 2016 and was unable to take care of himself.
Luckily, a good Samaritan came to his rescue and has since been supporting him up until recently when he suddenly stopped.
As a result, Eliud decided to go back to being a street boy and now survives by scavenging through people's trash in "California" Uasin Gishu county.
Speaking to The Standard, Eliud expressed bitterness over his situation.
"Nimejitahidi shuleni hadi nikapita na tena nimerudi hapa. Sasa wanataka tena niendelee kukaa hapa nivute gum tena nirudie ile maisha ya kitambo (I've worked hard and excelled but I'm back here. Do I continue staying here and continue with my earlier street life)?" He wondered.
"Mara nawaza, hapo usoni nitakuwaje na nilikua na hoja ya kusoma kabisa nikuwe mtu naweza kujisaidia. Sasa nimerudi hapa nikiwaza nitakuja kufa maskini (I'm thinking about my life since I expected to get educated and prosper. Now I'm back here thinking of my future)," Eliud lamented.
Other street boys who also spoke to the publication accused crook sponsors of helping them but later abandoning them once they had served their purpose.
Last week, Marvin Karimi, who emerged the best in his school with 382 marks, turned to tea picking in a bid to raise school fees.
The ex-Giakaibei Primary School student whose goal was to be a pilot earns Kshs 200 a day in the fields.
He revealed that he had given up on joining secondary school as he engages in the casual jobs to assist his mother look after eight of his siblings.
