Eliud Kipchoge Nominated for 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards

Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge was, on Friday, nominated among six sporting greats for the 2019 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.

The awards are considered highly prestigious and are frequently referred to as the sporting equivalent of an "Oscar".

The six include FIFA Best Young Player Kylian Mbappé, FIFA World Cup Golden Ball winner Luca Modric, NBA legend LeBron James, tennis world number one Novak Djokovic and Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton.

According to Kipchoge's social media, he was honored to be listed among ‘great athletes who all had such incredible performances’.

The winners, as voted for by the 66 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, will be unveiled at the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco on February 18.

The first ceremony was held on 25 May, 2000 in Monte Carlo at which Nelson Mandela gave the keynote speech.

During the 15th edition of the Sports Personality of the Year Awards (Soya) on January 11, Kipchoge was named the 2018 Sportsman of the Year at Fort Jesus in Mombasa.

In September 2018, he redefined the impossible by showing how far and how fast the human body could be pushed by winning the Berlin marathon in a world record of 2:01:39.

In doing so, he shattered the world record by 1 minute and 18 seconds.

On December 4, Kipchoge was named the 2018 IAAF Male Athlete of the Year at a colorful ceremony in Monaco.
